At Aurora Dental in Solihull, we class a dental emergency as anything that causes you pain, bleeding or swelling to the mouth, teeth or gums. If you are suffering pain or distress, we will also class this as a dental emergency too.

If you’re not sure if you have a dental emergency, please call the team at Aurora Dental who will let you know and book you in for an appropriate appointment.

In most cases, we can arrange for you to see the emergency dentist on the same day, but this will depend on the time of your call. This is why we encourage all patients with a dental emergency to phone us as soon as they can.

Common dental emergencies

Here are some of the more common dental emergencies that patients from Shirley, Solihull and The West Midlands need treatment from the emergency dentist for:

A dental abscess

If you have a dental abscess you will have an infection in your tooth and this can cause pain, swelling, inflammation and pus in your tooth, gum or jaw. You should call to see the emergency dentist as soon as you can, take paracetamol for the pain and drink fluids to stay hydrated. The emergency dentist will decide on the best course of action and this may involve antibiotics and / or root canal treatment.

Toothache

A constant toothache can be distressing. While you wait to see the emergency dentist, you should take paracetamol for the pain. You should avoid consuming very hot or very cold food and drinks. You can also rinse your mouth in warm salty water to alleviate the pain.

A knocked-out-tooth

This is a traumatic dental emergency and is time sensitive. The quicker you call to see the emergency dentist, the better chance we have of saving your tooth. If you have found the knocked-out tooth, you should carefully touch it by the crown only and never by the roots. Do not wash or over-handle the tooth. Keep it in your mouth until you get to the emergency dentist or pop it into a cup of cold milk and bring it with you.

What to do in a

Emergency during out of hours?

Dental emergencies do not always happen during the day. If you have a dental emergency and we are not open, you should call 111 NHS for advice.

You should only call 999 if:

  • you have sustained severe injuries which are causing bleeding and / or pain
  • You are experiencing swelling in your mouth which affecting your breathing
  • You are experiencing swelling which causing either eye to close
